Pond fountains are a unique way to add dissolved oxygen to your pond water and character to your landscape.
Traditionally, ponds included a waterfall feature to hide filters and add necessary dissolved oxygen to the water. Nowadays, the oxygen component can be addressed with the use of a fountain. Fountains come in all shapes and sizes, with a solution to suit any taste.
Pond fountains can be submersible, meaning that that the feature itself is underwater. The fountain uses the pump to force water through the fountain head and shower water over the pond surface. Depending on the nozzle you choose, this spray can be a fine mist, a heavy rain like spray, or any combination in between. Submersible fountains can also include light features that will compliment the water, making any pond spectacular at night.
The second type of water fountain is an above ground type. These fountains add a certain personal flair to your pond and can be as versatile as the pond owner himself. Above ground pond fountains also utilize the pump to push water through the feature. The main difference is that an above water pond fountain usually does not "spray" water, but "pour" water back into the pond in a steady stream. This is to reduce the amount of water lost through misting.
There is no limit to the number of water features you can have in a pond and many experts indicate that the more water agitation there is the more oxygen is being dissolved into the water for the fish and plants to use. The only consideration would be how much turbulence you would like to have on the surface. Too much and you won't be able to see your fish, too little and the water becomes unhealthy. At minimum, the entire surface of the water should "bounce".
